Things to do in Oklahoma City

Below is a list of activities all within 30 minutes of the temple. Our thought was that it would help the parents entertain kiddos while they are swapping sessions or just help make the trip to OKC one that everyone will look forward to.

1) Each location is grouped together with the other things in the same area of OKC (Downtown, East OKC, etc.)
2) a {*} means that the cost for this place is free
3) there should be links to all the places' websites.
4) if you want more ideas, check out the OKC Visitor's website.
5) another idea is to check out the local college websites (OSU has an agricultural branch right near the temple) and see if there are any lectures, recitals, exhibits, etc. going on.

DOWNTOWN

Myriad Gardens
*
Beautiful botanical gardens downtown. You have to pay if you want to go into the crystal bridge area (we have never actually been in that part, but it looks fun). There are ducks swimming on the pond, and it's a nice place to be and walk around for a while. We easily spend an hour or so here with the kids
Distance: 15-20 mins from temple. Downtown OKC

OKC Memorial and Museum
* (memorial is free, museum you have to pay)
This is a neat place to see. I have not personally been through the museum, but the memorial is nice.
Distance: 15-20 mins from temple. Downtown OKC

OKC Museum of Art
This has a big exhibit of Chihuly (I know I spelled that wrong...) It is awesome to see! If you go on the first weekend of the month, and you have a debit card from bank of America, then you get in free!
Distance: 15-20 mins from temple Downtown OKC

Bricktown Water Taxi
This is a fun thing to do. You get a neat little tour that lasts about 45 mins, and you can get on and off the water taxi as many times as you like during the day, too. Our kids really liked it.
Distance: 15-20 mins from temple Downtown OKC

Academy of Contemporary Music at UCO
* (I think it's free...you better check)
This just looked cool. I have never been, but they give tours.
Distance: 15-20 mins from temple. Downtown OKC

Bass Pro Shops
*
This is right along the Bricktown Water Taxi route, so you could do both of these things. There are also lots of other things within walking distance of here - just look up 'Bricktown'.
Distance: 15-20 mins from temple. Downtown OKC

MID/NORTH OKC/EDMOND

Metro Library
*
There are many library locations, and they always have fun classes and group things for kids. You can look at exactly what's going on on their calendar.
Distance: varies

Lake Hefner Parks
*
This is a great place with biking/walking trails around the lake, and parks, and restaurants, and a golf course on one side. So if your kids just want to get out and run around, then they might like it here.
Distance: 10 mins from temple

Martin Park Nature Center
* (I think it's free)
I have never been here, but it seems kinda cool! Check out their website, cuz it looks like they do classes or something like that.
Distance: 15 mins from temple. North OKC

Kite Park
*
This is just a fun park in a great area - the picture on the website doesn't do justice. It has great slides and swings and toys for the kids to climb on, and picnic tables and lots of shade and lots of wide open grass and the best part (or worse) is that the play area is all on top of sand - not wood chips! So you can bring your sand pails.
Distance: about 10-15 mins from temple. North of downtown

EAST OKC

Science Museum
We love this place. You could spend all day here and still not get through it all. I'm sure you can find coupons or discounts online. This would be a great place for kids of any age - and it's fun for the parents, too! They have a cafe in the museum, or a couple fast food places nearby. Right next door is the OKC zoo, and just across the street is the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.
Distance: 25 mins east of temple. (You could even be dropped off here on the way down, and then the person at the temple could come pick you up).

National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum
Never been here yet, but we hear great things about it all the time.
Distance: 25 mins east of temple.

SOUTH/NORMAN

Sam Noble Museum
This is down in Norman, so it might be more of a drive than you want to take, but they have dinosaur stuff and indian stuff. Of course they have more, but that's kind of all I remember. :)
Distance: about 30-40 mins from temple in Norman

WEST OKC/PIEDMONT

Chester's Party Barn
This is a fun 'farm'-like place. (Don't let the clown on the homepage scare you...ah! We actually didn't see Chester the Clown at all when we went). There is a little petting zoo, and the kids can ride little ponies, there's a bunch of games and then you take a tractor ride over to a corn maze and a big slide or something. They have yummy brisket sandwiches there, too, as well as other food if you want.
Distance: about 20 mins west of the temple in Piedmont
