Humanitarian Project for March

Guess what? March is Red Cross Month so we’ve decided to work with them to send Easter packages to the soldiers overseas. So we are just having evening Humanitarian Services on Thursday March 11 at 7 p.m. at the church. There will be no morning session.


So what are putting in these care packages? All the necessities…

•  Cookies and treats, store bought or homemade (we’ll provide ideas on Sunday for storage on homemade cookies)
•  Easter decorations! Be creative! Our contact at the Red Cross has been over to Afghanistan to help and she said that these little pieces of home really lift the soldiers’ spirit.
•  Letters of encouragement. We would love it if you want to write a short letter as a family, but we will also have paper available on Thursday night if you want to write a quick note too.

- If you are able, we’re also requesting $1-2 donations to help offset the cost of shipping. A flat rate box costs $12 but then we can stuff it as full as we want without being concerned about weight.

We would like to get a rough estimate of how many boxes we will need. Would you please e-mail Kristen Cornelsen at erikandkristen@gmail.com to let us know what you plan to put in these packages? There will also be a sign up sheet passed around on Sunday.

Donations Needed for Humanitarian

For our humanitarian activity this month will continue to work on tying quilts on February 11th. Last month we were able to finish tying two quilts and made two more quilt tops that we will be working on this month. In order to finish these two quilts we will need the remaining items to be donated. Also, we have learned that full sized quilts are the only need of the humanitarian center in Salt Lake City so we thought while we are at it, we might as well make as many as we can. These items will also need to be donated and since it is easier for some people to donate items instead of time, we are hoping this will be a great way to help through donations.

If you are interested in donating any of the following items please contact Lyndsay Jensen by phone (479) 268-0274 or by e-mail lyndsayjensen@gmail.com to ensure we get the most urgently needed items donated first, and not too many of the same item. If you are wanting to make your own quilt top or finished quilt to donate the Church's guidelines are as follows: Quilt needs to be approximately 90x90 with 1/2 inch seams, and either machine quilted or tied about every 4 to 4 1/2 inches. Suggested materials are cotton, cotton-poly blends, and flannel. Denim and corduroy should be avoided.

Needed Items for our activity on Feb 11th

• 2 Batting size 90x90 (can be bought at Walmart in bags or at Hobby Lobby)
• 2 Queen Sized Flat Sheets to be used as the backs of the Quilts
• Thread

Needed items to make more quilts (we will be using sheets as the tops and bottoms of the quilts)

• Queen Sized Flat Sheets some with prints for the tops of the quilts and some plain colors for the bottom, please contact Lyndsay Jensen to find out what is needed
• Batting for size: Queen

Humanitarian for February

Humanitarian Service will be held on Feb. 11th from 10-12 and again from 7-9 at the church. We will be working on quilts.

Some of you may be wondering why we're not focusing on hygiene or newborn kits after the recent earthquake in Haiti. Kristen and Carrie have both been impressed that that is not what we need to be doing right now. The Church lets us know what the current needs are and in the past we have done the kits. We didn't know at that time who they would help. But since they were made and shipped to the storehouses, the Church was ready with kits already made when the crisis in Haiti happened. The Church was ready to help because of your generous donations of items and time. We thank you greatly. Please know that all the projects that you have helped with are making a difference to people throughout the world. Thanks again!

SALT LAKE CITY - The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints appealed today to the worldwide membership of the Church to help relieve the suffering in Haiti.


In a statement published on the Church’s official Web site, Church President Thomas S. Monson and counselors Henry B. Eyring and Dieter F. Uchtdorf said they are “keenly aware that many in America are dealing with economic challenges brought on by the recent recession.” Many Church members have made substantial contributions to Church Humanitarian Services, but more is needed.

Church members and others wishing to contribute to the aid efforts may do so by using the Donation Slip they normally use for Church donations or by logging onto lds.org and clicking on Humanitarian Services Emergency Response.

The Church’s humanitarian outreach to the poor dates from its earliest beginnings, but major international efforts have included relief shipments at the end of World War II, aid during the Ethiopian famine in the 1980s and most recently relief after the Asian tsunami. Efforts include not only immediate relief but long-term restructuring.

Often, the Church collaborates with other organizations to provide shipments of food and other needed items.

Today’s First Presidency statement also addressed the emotional trauma the Haitian people are experiencing in the wake of the devastating earthquake.

“Money is not the only need in Haiti,” the statement continued. “People are frightened, bewildered, and wholly uncertain about their future. In addition to what people can do in helping with food, water and shelter, there needs to be a calming influence over that troubled nation. We invite people everywhere to supplicate God for a spirit of calm and peace among the people.”

Help for Haiti

Dear Friends,

Given the circumstances in Haiti, I am sending this World Disaster Report which just came to us today. Some have asked how they may help. In response, I don’t know for sure yet but I suspect the Church will be needing Hygiene Kits or School Kits, and Blankets and Quilts.

The Church always customizes its Emergency Response to the specific requests of the local area church leaders, and the local government. Since that is still being worked on at this point, the Church Emergency Response Dept has told us so far that the Church is currently preparing to respond to the very serious situation in Haiti, and donations are welcome. Those wishing to assist may donate to the Emergency Response fund. This fund is used to respond to natural disasters when they happen around the world and is not restricted to a certain area.
